If you’re looking to experience Vancouver’s holiday lights without spending much (or anything at all), Destination Downtown is one of the best seasonal events in the city. Running throughout December, with select installations continuing into February, this city-wide celebration transforms downtown Vancouver with festive lights, pop-up attractions, and winter activities.
The season officially begins with the Christmas tree lighting at the Vancouver Art Gallery’s North Plaza. While the tree lighting itself was a bit anti-climactic this year, the surrounding attractions make the area worth adding to your holiday itinerary.
From December 2 to January 3, visitors can ride a mini Ferris wheel near the Art Gallery Plaza — and it’s free on Tuesdays, making it a great budget-friendly winter activity. Just one block away, Robson Square features a small outdoor ice skating rink, also free, and open through the end of February. It’s an easy stop to pair with holiday shopping or an evening walk downtown.
Lit Word Installations & Photo Spots
While Swiftcouver isn’t returning this year, the popular lit word installations are back in holiday form. These glowing signs are scattered across downtown Vancouver and are perfect for quick photo stops and Instagram moments.
The main Vancouver sign is located at the Art Gallery Plaza, with five additional illuminated words placed across downtown — stretching from Yaletown to the Vancouver Convention Centre. I tracked down as many as I could, and I’ve linked the exact locations below to make your hunt easier. If I missed one, let me know!

Winter-Themed Light Displays Across Downtown

In addition to the word installations, downtown Vancouver features a variety of winter and animal-themed light displays throughout the season. Expect glowing snowflakes and reindeer at Robson Plaza, along with oversized illuminated bears and polar bears near the Convention Centre.
Destination Downtown also hosts daily performances, live entertainment, and pop-up events across the city. Schedules are updated weekly on their website, so it’s worth checking ahead of time if you’re planning your evening around a specific performance.
Lights of Hope at St. Paul’s Hospital

While you’re downtown, take a short walk to St. Paul’s Hospital on Burrard Street to see the annual Lights of Hope display. This meaningful holiday installation supports the St. Paul’s Foundation fundraiser and has become a beloved Vancouver tradition.
The season kicks off in late November with a family-friendly launch event and fireworks, but the lights remain on display throughout December, making it an easy and worthwhile stop during the holiday season.
