Overview

Welcome to Edinburgh—a city where medieval history meets modern style. Whether you’re here for Edinburgh Castle, cashmere sweaters, or high-end designer boutiques, Scotland’s capital offers a shopping experience as diverse as its history. From cobblestoned streets lined with tartan shops to sleek galleria-style malls, this is your ultimate shopping guide to Edinburgh.

The Royal Mile: Souvenirs, Tweed & Whisky

No trip to Edinburgh is complete without walking the Royal Mile. Stretching from Edinburgh Castle to the Palace of Holyroodhouse, this historic cobblestoned street is the beating heart of Old Town.

Here you’ll find:

  • Classic Scottish souvenirs: tartan scarves, tweed jackets, cashmere, and of course, whisky.

  • 72+ souvenir shops (yes, really), along with artisan boutiques.

  • Tron Kirk Market: a modern artisan market featuring 20+ Scottish artists and designers affiliated with the Scottish Design Exchange.

If you’re visiting during the Edinburgh Festival Fringe, expect packed streets, street performers, and an atmosphere unlike anywhere else. Just remember—comfortable shoes are essential.

Victoria Street: Edinburgh’s Most Photographed Street

Steps away from the Royal Mile is the colorful, winding Victoria Street. With its rainbow facades, steep curve, and storybook feel, it’s one of the most photographed spots in the city—and often compared to Diagon Alley from Harry Potter.

Here you’ll find a mix of:

  • Independent boutiques

  • Quirky bookstores

  • Vintage shops

  • Unique gift shops

Even if you’re not shopping, Victoria Street is a must-visit for the photo opportunities alone.

Edinburgh Castle: A Scottish Icon

While Edinburgh Castle isn’t exactly a shopping destination, it does feature three gift shops selling Scottish-themed souvenirs and history-inspired gifts. Tickets cost £21.50 for adults, and it’s wise to book in advance, especially during summer.

On a budget? Don’t worry—you can admire the castle from many stunning viewpoints across the city.

Princes Street: High Street Shopping with a View

Cross into New Town and you’ll find Princes Street, Edinburgh’s main shopping artery. Stretching nearly a mile from the West End to Calton Hill, it’s lined with UK and international brands including:

  • Marks & Spencer

  • Boots

  • Primark

  • Uniqlo

  • Urban Outfitters

  • H&M

What makes Princes Street special is the setting—shops on one side, and Princes Street Gardens with dramatic views of Edinburgh Castle on the other. You’ll also find cultural stops like the Royal Scottish Academy and the National Galleries of Scotland here, making it a perfect mix of shopping and sightseeing.

George Street: Chic Boutiques & Beauty Brands

Just a block above Princes Street, George Street offers a more refined shopping experience. Lined with Georgian architecture, this elegant boulevard is home to upscale shops and restaurants.

Expect to find:

  • Fashion brands: All Saints, Anthropologie, Abercrombie, Barbour, FatFace

  • Beauty favorites: Space NK, Bobbi Brown

  • Activewear: Lululemon, Sweaty Betty, Helly Hansen

The pace here is slower and less crowded, perfect for a leisurely afternoon of browsing.

Multrees Walk: Luxury Fashion in the City Centre

At the east end of George Street, Multrees Walk is Edinburgh’s answer to Bond Street—a pedestrian-friendly enclave of luxury. Expect to see:

  • Gucci

  • Burberry

  • Louis Vuitton

  • Max Mara

  • Michael Kors

Even if you’re not in the market for designer fashion, this area is worth strolling through. Plus, it leads directly into the sleek upper levels of St James Quarter.

Harvey Nichols: Beauty & Designer Finds

Next door to Multrees Walk sits Harvey Nichols, one of the UK’s most iconic luxury department stores.

Inside, you’ll find:

  • A ground floor beauty hall with brands from Chanel to Sol de Janeiro

  • Designer fashion from Zimmermann, The Row, Alaïa and more

  • A stylish fourth-floor restaurant offering afternoon tea with a view

Compared to London department stores, Harvey Nichols Edinburgh feels more intimate and welcoming.

St James Quarter: Edinburgh’s Newest Shopping Destination

Opened in 2021, the St James Quarter is a multi-level retail and dining hub that redefines modern shopping in Edinburgh.

Highlights include:

  • Fashion brands: Zara, COS, Superdry

  • Department store: John Lewis (a more accessible option than Harvey Nichols)

  • Beauty: Kiehl’s, The Body Shop, Aesop, Molton Brown, Space NK, H Beauty

  • Extras: A food court, rooftop dining, boutique cinema, and even a champagne bar serving waffles inside H Beauty.

If the weather turns (which it often does in Scotland), this is the perfect indoor shopping escape.

Final Thoughts

From tartan and whisky on the Royal Mile to luxury fashion at Harvey Nichols and modern retail at St James Quarter, Edinburgh’s shopping scene truly has something for everyone. Whether you’re hunting for Scottish souvenirs, browsing indie boutiques, or indulging in high fashion, this city blends history, culture, and style like nowhere else.

This was my third trip to Edinburgh, and I still discover something new each time. Edinburgh remains one of my favorite cities in the world—and a shopper’s paradise.
