Victoria might just be Canada's independent bookstore capital. For a city this size, the concentration of great bookshops downtown is almost unfair — everything from a century-old bank turned book palace to one of the largest independent bookstores in the entire country, all within an easy afternoon's walk.

If you're a book lover planning a trip to Vancouver Island — or you just can't pass a bookshop without going in — this is your guide to four unforgettable Victoria bookstores, and how to decide which one deserves your time if you only have time for one.

Bastion Books: The One You Stumble Upon

My first stop is the kind that's easy to walk right past — and this one wasn't even on my list. I just happened to walk by, which is my favorite way to find a bookshop.

Tucked into historic Bastion Square, Bastion Books is one of Victoria's few remaining used bookstores, and one of the coziest. Think exposed brick walls and a reading nook set into the landing of the stairwell — the kind of spot you settle into and lose an hour. The shelves run from vintage to contemporary, and there's an upstairs section for kids stocked with everything from picture books to classic Nancy Drew.

I collect old and rare books, and I walked out with a vintage anthology of William Wordsworth's poetry for my collection. If a quiet, cozy used bookstore is your idea of a perfect afternoon, this one is well worth seeking out.

Sorensen Books: A Hole-in-the-Wall Gem

A short walk from the downtown core, Sorensen Books is worth the little detour if you love a proper hole-in-the-wall find. It carries a thoughtfully curated mix of used, new, and rare books, alongside vintage postcards and photographs that are worth a browse in their own right. It's small — but cozy, and full of character.

Munro's Books: The Cathedral

Victoria's most famous — and most Instagrammed — bookstore needs no introduction, but it earns its reputation. Munro's Books on Government Street was founded in 1963 by Jim Munro and his then-wife Alice Munro, who would go on to win the Nobel Prize in Literature.

Since 1984, the shop has lived inside a former Royal Bank building from 1909: all neo-classical grandeur, with a coffered ceiling soaring twenty-four feet overhead. It's been called one of the most magnificent bookstores in North America, and standing inside it, that's easy to believe.

It's stunning, but it's popular — expect crowds spilling in from Government Street, especially in summer. And Munro's is primarily a new-book store: you'll find the latest releases and gorgeous editions, but not the dusty vintage or rare finds I tend to hunt for. So come for the architecture, and maybe a new bestseller for the trip home — just know it's more cathedral than treasure hunt. Still, if you love books, you really can't visit Victoria and skip it.

Russell Books: The Powell's of Canada

My last stop is the one I'd send you to first. Russell Books is one of the largest used bookstores in Canada, with more than a million books stacked floor to ceiling. From the outside it looks a little unassuming — but walk in, and you'll understand why I call it the Powell's Books of Canada.

This family-run shop has been going since the sixties, and in 2019 they moved the entire collection across the street by hand. You feel that scale the moment you step inside. New releases, out-of-print treasures, vintage paperbacks, rare finds — it's all here, and it's genuinely well curated. (And if you're the type who color-codes your shelves, this is the bookshop of your dreams.)

The rare and vintage collection is extensive. I left with a 120-year-old edition of Through the Looking Glass and two vintage Shakespeare plays. If you only visit one bookstore in Victoria, make it this one — it's the perfect blend of vintage, used, and new, and a wonderful place to spend an afternoon.
